Master of Information Technology (Non-IT graduates) (IT45)

This program is designed for non-IT graduates who wish to broaden their career opportunities by gaining a postgraduate IT qualification. The program allows students to specialise in a wide range of areas including software engineering, data communications and information systems.

This program aims to build on non-IT skills acquired in previous study, such as critical and analytical skills, as well as provide an IT curriculum with depth and breadth, from introductory to advance level.

Students are encouraged to focus on those parts of the employment spectrum where cross-disciplinary qualifications are most appreciated.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed a bachelor degree in a discipline other than information technology with a grade point average of at least 4.5 (on a 7-point scale). In addition, applicants are assumed to be computer literate, as demonstrated by the following skills:

  • use and manage email facilities, including attachments
  • create and manage the content and structure of an elctronic filing system (eg via Windows in a home or office computer environment)
  • understand how to locate, download and use resources on the internet
  • be familiar with the typical desktop environment, including word processing, spreadsheeting etc
  • understand personal computing security issues with regard to backups, viruses, password protection.

These basic skills will not be taught in the course. QUT-wide resources are made available for individuals to improve their computer literacy levels.

Master of Information Technology (IT Graduates) (IT40)

This Master of Information Technology course, with nested graduate diploma and graduate certificates, is aimed at information technology graduates who wish to revise, update or extend their IT skills and knowledge. With multiple specialisations now emerging in IT, applicants may wish to study advanced units in their own specialisation, and/or move into an entirely different area of IT study.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor degree majoring in information technology (IT) with a grade point average of at least 4.5 (on a 7-point scale). Alternatively, applicants without an IT degree may submit evidence of work experience and/or other training equivalent to an IT major, to satisfy the Executive Dean that the applicant is suitably equipped for tertiary studies and a course of specialised IT study. Guidelines for making this submission are available from the Faculty upon request.

International student entry

Masters of Information Technology (Advanced) (IT48)

The two-year Master of Information Technology (Advanced) program is aimed at early career information technology professionals who wish to obtain specialised skills combined with introductory business studies. The program builds on the existing Master of Information Technology (IT Graduates) course of 12 units, with a choice of four extra units or 48 credit points from business electives and/or advanced level IT electives. The current Master of Information Technology (IT Graduates) course is designed for students from an IT background wishing to gain further IT specialisations. This program is distinguished from the existing Master of Information Technology as it presents the opportunity to include an additional four units, which will be chosen from the Graduate Certificate in Business units - Integrated Marketing Communication, International Business, Marketing or Public Management - or advanced IT units.

Master of Information Management (IT70)

This program will provide graduates with the skills to find employment in a broad spectrum of information work, specifically in public, academic and special libraries and within corporate and government information management contexts. Graduates will play an increasing role in understanding and managing the complexities of information impacting on society as a whole. The program will provide richness to the library and information studies profession through the diverse first degrees students have attained.

This course offers the opportunity to specialise in the areas of Library Studies, Information and Knowledge Management, Records Management and Web Management.

Entry requirements

Applicants for Information and Knowledge Management, Records Management or Web Management programs must have a demonstrated competence in the basic skills and concepts of personal or office computer usage (eg desktop applications, email, internet access); and a bachelor degree in a discipline other than library or information studies with a grade point average of at least 4.5 (on a 7-point scale); or evidence of qualifications (for example Recognised Prior Learning) which will satisfy the Executive Dean that the applicant possesses the capacity to pursue the course of study; and at least five years relevant full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time experience).
