Pathways to a PhD

Postgraduate Research

If you have a passion for discovery, for seeing things in a new way or love the challenge of solving important problems, a research degree with the Faculty of Information Technology can launch you into a variety of exciting career options. Students can choose to undertake honours, masters by research or doctoral programs.

At QUT we know that research students thrive when they have a topic they are passionate about, a supervisor who supports their learning, and a leading-edge research environment that challenges their thinking. If you are considering a research degree, there are a number of pathways to a PhD you may follow to reach your research destination.

For further information regarding honours please see the honours course information page.

Choose a research topic

We recommend that you browse through the research section of the Faculty's website, read about our research strengths - Enterprise Systems, Innovative Technologies, Information Sciences and Smart Tools and Services. We also recommend that you visit the Information Security Institute (ISI). Alternatively contact faculty staff who can help you find an appropriate QUT researcher to discuss your topic with you. Staff will ensure your topic has the right scope and scale for the research degree you wish to complete. Discussing your interests early will make completing your application and research proposal much easier.

You can visit QUT's ePrints, a web-based collection of academic papers showcasing the research outputs of QUT academic staff and postgraduate students. You can also visit the Australian Digital Thesis database to read completed theses by past QUT research students.
