IF48 Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Information Technology
Transitional arrangements for IF48 continuing students
The Faculty of Information Technology and Faculty of Business have been collaborating to review and revise the double degree program. Starting in Semester 1, 2007 we will roll out a revised version of the Bachelor of Business /Bachelor of Information Technology*.
Basically it's about offering more options in building IT skill sets in the IT Component, and reducing the overall number of subjects in the course.
Students in the new double degree will have access to nominate a major within the IT Component, ie you will be able to choose from the full range of majors available.
You will also only be required to complete 32 units overall (16 IT units and 16 Business units).
*SUBJECT TO AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT APPROVAL TO OFFER TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CRICOS: 00213J
What is my option?
You have two options and you must pick ONE:
Option A : Stay in your existing IF48 degree and finish the course in which you are enrolled.
Option B: Transfer to the new double degree IX33 and finish one of the new IT majors.
PLEASE NOTE: International students are not currently eligible to apply for transfer to the new double degree for 2007 until approved by the relevant Australian Government authorities to offer the course to International students. If you are an International student interested in transferring, please register your interest with Ms Anne Hibbard, Student Business Support Officer, at email a.hibbard@qut.edu.au
How will you decide which option is better for you?
If you pick Option A (stay in existing double degree) then the rules relating to your existing degree apply.
If you select Option B (transfer to new double degree) then you get access to the IT majors. Exactly how much access you will get depends on how far you have progressed already through your existing degree and the major you nominate under the new double degree.
It is important to note that there are no IT electives in the new program – only core units and Major units. Therefore you must consider your IT major choice thoroughly, because changing majors later may cause you to lose credit ie if you choose Networking Systems as your major now, and then decide to change to the Information Technology Management major later on, your Networking Systems units would not count towards Information Technology Management.
The business component of the new course has changed compared to your existing double degree course. Students are required to complete:
- 96 credit points (8 units) of Faculty core units
- 96 credit points (8 units) in your nominated major (study area A)
It is important to note you are not required to nominate/undertake units in a second business major (Study Area B) in the new double degree course. Your primary major (Study Area A) on your academic record in IF48 will be listed as your major in IX33.
NOTE: Students can only choose the IT component major Electronic Business (EBI) if they have not selected the Electronic Business major within their Business component
To get you to the point where you can pick the option that is better for you, we need you to follow the steps set out below.
We will run information sessions during September/October to help you through the process.
Step 1 – how far through are you in IF48?
As a rule-of-thumb, if you have completed the standard (or up to standard) progression of the first year of your course at the end of 2006 (that is, you are entering Year 2 in 2007), then we think that you'd probably be better moving over to IX33.
Anything outside the standard first year progression would depend on the major you nominate under IX33 and the stage of your IF48 course progression, whether you have commenced studies in your second major in the business component of your course and the stage of your IF48 course progression.
Step 2a – what do you need to do to stay and complete IF48?
Access the 2007 Course Summary Sheet for IF48.
What you need to do is take the list of units you have completed, line it up with the units in the IF48 Course Summary Sheet, and put a line through those that you have completed. What remains is what you have to do. Sound simple?
Step 2b – what do you need to do to transfer over and complete IX33?
It's the same process as determining the units you need to complete if you stay in IF48. You will need the IX33 course summary sheet . In the IT component, you will also need what we have called the ‘Transfer Assessment' document. From these you should be able to work out the IT units which would be recognised in IX33 based on the IT units you have completed in IF48. This would then leave you with the set of IT units that you must complete in IX33.
Step 3 – what do I do next?
If you think that Option A is the one for you then you should re-enrol under IF48 for 2007 according to the IF48 course summary sheet when the 2007 Online Enrolment portlet is activated on 9 October 2006.
If you think Option B is your future, you should re-enrol under IF48 in the relevant units according to the IX33 course summary sheet when the 2007 Online Enrolment portlet is activated on 9 October 2006. If your application is approved, your enrolment for 2007 will then be transferred to the IX33 course attempt in January/February 2007 upon finalisation of Semester 2, 2006 results.
You must also complete the Application for Change to IX33 form by 30th November 2006. The following process then applies:
Domestic students who submit the Application for Change to IX33 form: When your application to transfer is approved, all relevant units from IF48 will be transferred into IX33. Previous grades of the units completed in IF48 will appear on the IX33 academic record and contribute towards the course GPA of IX33. All attempts of relevant units will be transferred to the IX33 academic record, ie if you attempt a unit twice and the unit is recognised within the IX33 degree, both the fail and pass grade will be transferred to the IX33 degree. Non relevant units for the new degree will not appear on the academic record of the new degree.
In the Business component of your course, your primary major (Study Area A) listed on your academic record in IF48 will be listed as your business major in IX33.
Commonwealth supported students can authorise QUT to apply their existing Commonwealth assistance option/s and/or Tax file number to their new course. You can provide this authorisation on the “Application to Change to IX33” form. Please note that if you choose not to give authorisation, it is your responsibility to complete a new form (CAF) which is available online before the census date of your first teaching period in the new course. More Information regarding Request for Commonwealth support requests is available at: http://www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/costs/help/hecs/ecaf.jsp
International students who are considering transferring to IX33 (when the transfer process for International students is finalised): If approved for transfer, the relevant units from IF48 will be transferred into IX33 as credit only . Previous grades of the units completed in IF48 will not appear on the IX33 academic record nor contribute towards the course GPA of IX33.
International students approved to transfer will receive an offer in the new course which must be accepted or the transfer will not proceed . You will then receive documentation (eCOE) for their new course. You will not be required to pay the first semester fee of the new course up front, rather you will receive a statement of account as per previous semesters.
Anything else I should know?
Once your application is approved, the decision is final. There is no provision for you to change your mind and resume the IF48 course attempt.
The transfer process does not allow for students to nominate a different major in the Business component of IX33. If you would like to change your business major you will need to submit an R/I form with your application to transfer from IF48 to IX33.
Since class timetabling is established based on standard course progression, the Faculty cannot guarantee a clash free timetable for students who opt to transfer to IX33. You will need to identify the remaining units to complete within IX33 and select appropriate enrolment when the class timetable is released each semester.
If you are encumbered your transfer from IF29 to IX33 will not proceed until your encumbrance is lifted.
If you are placed on probation at the end of 2006 Academic Year, you will not be permitted to transfer from IF48 to IX33. You will be eligible to apply to transfer when your probationary enrolment period has ended.
If you are excluded from IF48at the end of 2006 Academic Year you will not be permitted to transfer to IX26 until you have successfully appealed the exclusion.
