Q1. How do I hand in an assignment within the Faculty?

The University has in place a computerised assignment submission and results system. Assignments are to be submitted by the due date to any one of the QUT Student Computing Helpdesks on each campus.

Because hundreds of assignments are due on particular days, it is necessary to have cut-off times for the receipt of assignments. All assignments must be submitted 15 minutes prior to the close of the QUT Student Computing Helpdesks. The computer assignment system will not accept submissions after these times.

More details can be found on the Assignment Submission & Results page.

Q2. What is OAS (Online Assignment Submission)?

The FIT Online Assignment System OAS allows the submission of assignments via the World Wide Web. Only assignments that have been designated by unit coordinators can use the OAS. Make sure you keep a record of the receipt number when submitting an assignment on the OAS.

If you are having problems with submitting your assignment on to the OAS there is a OAS FAQ web page that may help. If you are having problems with the OAS outside QUT then it would be a good idea if you submitted the assignment in the S Block labs.

Make sure you test the OAS before the due date because not knowing how to use the OAS is not a excuse for an extension.

Q3. Where do I hand in my assignments? And how are they to be presented?

Manually submitted assignments require submitting a hardcopy of the assignment at one of the QUT Student Computing Helpdesks on each campus.

Your assignment needs to be in a 'pouch type' manila folder (so the contents can't fall out) called a 'document wallet'. These are available from the bookshop or even cheaper from larger stores. You then have to attach an Assignment Minder Submission Form available from the QUT Assignment Minder Site

All assignments need to have one of these attached to them (as they have the bar code that is scanned to enter the assignment into the Assignment Minder system). For assignments that require a disk (floppy, CD, DVD) to be handed in, the disk must be attached to the inside front of the folder in a paper sleeve. When the assignment is handed in you will automatically receive an email from AM confirming that you have handed your assignment in.

More details can be found on the Assignment Submission & Results page.

Q4. How do I find out results for assignments?

Marked assignments are available for collection from the QUT Student Computing Helpdesk. Students will be emailed when an assignment is ready for collection and from which Helpdesk to collect their assignment from. Student cards are required to retrieve assignments. Uncollected assignments are kept at the Helpdesk for approximately 6 months after submission ('one semester'). Assignments remaining after this time are destroyed.

Results can be obtained by logging on to the OAS or your My.Fit web site.

Q5. Can I get an extension for assignments?

Yes, if you are faced with extraordinary circumstances.

Applications for extensions must be submitted directly to the unit coordinator prior to and no later than the due date of the assignment. Applications received after that time will only be considered under exceptional circumstances. Extension will only be considered on medical, work or family circumstance grounds. They will only be accepted if they are accompanied by appropriate written evidence.

To have the best chance of gaining an extension you should ask the unit co-ordinator (during their consultation time or by email) well before the item is due.

Your request for extension may be looked on more favorably if you ask well in advance and of course you show them you are keen. The amount of time you receive will depend on the unit-co-ordinator and on how much time you ask for. If you ask for an extension the day before it is due you will more than likely not receive it.

Q6. Some General Hints

Presentation - Easy marks can be gained from spending a little time on presentation. Go to the library photocopy area and purchase a clear faced plastic ring binder (at most $2) and bind the contents of your assignment. Do up a colour front page and print that out. The library offers colour printing but it is time consuming and costly.

Spell Check - Use the spell checker in your word processor. Again this is easy marks.

Contents Page, Bibliography and References - More than likely this will be asked in the specification but if it isn't then include it anyway. Any time you read or use someone else's work either through a book, journal, magazine, or the internet, you need to reference it. You can purchase a small QUT publication book at the QUT book shop called "The Written Assignment" (or view it online) that will tell you about assignments and how to reference properly. Referencing is very important at QUT and severe penalties can be imposed if you don't reference properly.

Q7. Late Assignments

Assignments will not be accepted if more than two weeks late or if the material has been subsequently reviewed in class.

Assignments received up to two weeks late will be accepted but a sliding scale of penalties will apply. The default penalty scale to operate in the Faculty is provided below. However, individual lecturers may establish different penalties for their unit with Head of School approval; if so these will be detailed on the Week One Document.

The penalties, unless otherwise specified in the Week One Document, are:

    1 day late

10% of the mark given is deducted.

    2 days late

20% of the mark given is deducted.

    3 – 4 days late

30% of the mark given is deducted.

    5 – 7 days late

40% of the mark given is deducted.

    8 – 10 days late

50% of the mark given is deducted

    > 10 days late

100% of the mark given is deducted
