Q1. How do I search for staff contact details?

For a List of Staff at the IT Faculty or a complete listing of QUT Staff can be searched. Staff search is also available on your QUT Virtual.

Q2. What is PASS (Peer Assisted Study Scheme)?

PASS (Peer Assisted Study Scheme) is designed to aid students in their first year of university life and study. It enables students to work with other students, who are undertaking the same units, to further understand the material covered within them.

Each week students meet together with a PASS leader (second or third year students who have successfully completed all the first year units). Within these sessions any problems which have occurred in lectures, tutorials or assignments can be addressed. In this scheme students learn to help, and gain help from each other.

PASS is also available to students in the Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies (IT25) and Master of Information Management (IT70) and covers introductory units in the Graduate Diploma/Masters of Information Technology (IT38/IT45).

Contact person: Sauwan Chew
Room: S501
Phone: 3138 2871

PASS Timetable is now available under Blackboard by searching for PASS under your community tab

Q3. What is My.FIT?

My.FIT is the Faculty of Information Technology Student Information System. Students gain access to My.FIT once they are enrolled in a FIT unit.

Students can use My.FIT to:

  • check their marks for assignments and mid-semester exams
  • check on the status of submitted assignments
  • view available projects
  • propose projects
  • access faculty software downloads
  • view Exam Perusal bookings

My.FIT is accessible online at http://my.fit.qut.edu.au.

Q4. What is the student Home Drive (H: Drive)?

All IT students have a personal ‘home’ drive. From FIT computer labs (S Block) this drive is automatically connected as H:\ drive. Each student has 500mb of personal storage on their ‘home’ drive. For more information on the home drive, and instructions on how to FTP in, click here.

Q5. When are FIT labs available?

Opening Hours
During semester the laboratories operated by the Faculty are available for use between the hours of 8:00am and 9:30pm weekdays. On weekends and public holidays they will be open from 9:00am to 4:45pm.

There are 24-hour labs available in S block level 6 including the printing room S607. After hours, you must swipe your student card to gain access to the building and lifts. Entry and exit is through Level 2.

Labs running Linux can be found in S block level 7 (S729) and 6 (S622), and these are both 24-hour labs.

Classes for the week are posted outside the lab, however you may be able to use a computer even if there is a class, just ensure there is a spare terminal available and no students for that class are waiting.

The hallway monitors on each level will also display the machine availability in each of the labs.

Q6. Which labs have FIT software installed?

All computer labs on levels 5-8 of S Block have FIT software installed. Some of these labs only contain Data-comms machines and do not have Windows images installed. Labs in other blocks or computers in the library will not have FIT software installed on them.

Q7. Where can I print in S block?

You can print from any PC in the FIT laboratories. When you have submitted your print job, go to S607 and login to one of the two print stations in the front row. Insert your printing card and select the job you wish to print. These are high speed printers so the delay should be minimal.

For any problems encountered, you can contact QUT Printing Services on extension 1474 using the phone in the corridor opposite S607.

Q8. Where are there vending machines or print credit top-up stations in S Block?

S Block contains vending machines on levels 2, 3, 4 and 8. The vending machines on levels 3 and 4 are near the western entrance (outside S310/S410). There is also a new print credit top-up station next to the vending machines on level 4.
