Research

The Faculty has a commitment to undertake innovative research in IT to benefit industry and the wider community, to advance the state of the art and to produce research students capable of the same. The Faculty's research program spans a continuum of expertise from hardware through to IT Project Management.

Engagement with the Faculty enables organisations to reduce recruitment and research and development costs and provides access to the financial and intellectual benefits of conducting research in collaboration with the university and research and industry funding bodies. These partnerships allow organisations the return of the maximum tax benefit derived from funding research through a Registered Research Agency.

Industry research interactions which involve commercialisation of QUT intellectual property, technology transfer or other QUT intellectual property transactions are managed by qutbluebox, the commercialisation company for QUT.

Collaborative Research

As a research institution, QUT offers granting opportunities as part of collaborative research projects with external partners. Government and industry sources may initiate projects involving an agreement to conduct strategic research or research which creates a basis for future research results.

Grants and funding sources for research and development projects include the Federal Government's International Linkages Scheme, Commercial Ready Program and the Australian Research Council's (ARC) Linkage Projects Program.

Examples of collaborative research partnerships include the Smart Card Based Electronic Cash research undertaken with Telstra and the Australian Research Council and ARC Linkage projects undertaken with SAP, Water Corporation, WA and SWS Pty Ltd, Sydney.

Contract research

The Faculty has an extensive history of engaging with industry in contract research. By working with QUT, organisations can readily increase their critical mass of expertise on a project, reducing recruitment costs.

Examples of these research interactions include our pioneering work on Microsoft's .NET platform; Enterprise Systems and Process Engineering case studies with SAP, Ergon Energy, BP, Queensland Health and Parmalat; and Secure Rail communications with the railway industry.
