School of Software Engineering and Data Communications

The School of Software Engineering and Data Communications is part of the Faculty of Information Technology at QUT.

This School was formed in 2002 with the merger of the then School of Computing Science and Software Engineering, with the School of Data Communications. We are located in S block on QUT's Gardens Point Campus.

Within the Undergraduate program, the School runs several majors within the Bachelor of Information Technology, including Software Architecture, Network Systems, Games Technology, Security, Intelligent Systems and Web Services & Architecture. There are also dual degree programs with other Faculties, such as Business/IT, IT/Education, Engineering/IT and IT/Law.

Postgraduate courses include Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas, Masters of Information Technology and Doctoral (PhD) programs.

There are around 40 on-going academic staff in the School, as well as casual academic staff, who are predominantly doctoral candidates. The Head of School is Professor Mark Looi.

Teaching, research and industry liaisons all form significant aspects of the School's activities. Academic staff participate in teaching, in performing world-class research into new, exciting and innovative areas, and work closely with industrial partners to solve real-world research problems and ensure relevancy in teaching programs.

An important and vibrant part of the School are the research students, enrolled in both PhD and Masters by Research programs. Many of these students are also casual tutors, enabling a further linkage between teaching and research activities.
